This book had it all - action! adventure! family drama! revenge! history! tension! politics! feminism! boats! friendship! science! caves! intrigue! a magic tree that is fed by lies! It deals with a range of issues, themes and ideas without being too preachy. Although it occasionally got a little heavy handed in presenting it's themes, the message was so great that I didn't mind.
Excuse me, I'm off to investigate Hardinge's back catalogue.
